On Sunday, Blue Devils robotics team finally went to state!!!!!!
Here is the presentation that we presented to the judges.
Here is the presentation that we presented to the judges.
Here is what my coach CPT. Gottschalk said in the eamil, he siad that we have a chance!
After months of preparation and countless hours of hard work, the FUMA robotics team completed its final qualifying match of the year. Following the Blue Devils qualifier at UVA (Shenandoah), lessons were learned and strategies for success were modified and improved. Cadet Zimu Li and cadet Corey Jameson attended today’s qualifier at Orange County High School.
The Blue Devils were primed to do well in their first two matches of the day but were unable to pull off a win in either of them. While Skylark scored over 200 ranking points, it was not enough for a win. Match three provided the team with some hope. Together with their alliance, they were able to win and acquire a total of 312 ranking points. The momentum continued to follow them as they completed match four, scoring 110 more ranking points with a huge assist from their alliance partner, with nail-biting win.
Skylark was able to climb the rankings through the afternoon of competition. The Blue Devils reached ninth place out of twenty-six teams in their division (Kamen). In addition, their ranking points were higher than any other team with a total of 522. While their performance was a great improvement from last qualifier, they were not selected as one of the top four teams. The only hope they had for the finals was to be selected as an alliance by a winning team. The anticipation grew as each team was selected.
To the Blue Devil’s surprise they were selected by team 7955 (NYX) as their first partner. The excitement was growing as the cadets prepared for their first semi-final event. They were able to strategize who would play first and how they would score points. Skylark was selected to play the second match and the pressure was on, as their alliance team was not able to put out a win in the first. In a best of three semi-final match, they were up to the challenge, yet an ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) event shot those hopes as Skylark spun out of control.
Their hope to advance to states was gone, there was no rematch and the season seemed to be over. After much encouragement, the Blue Devils were able to celebrate all that they had achieved this season. Captain Zimu Li began thinking about next year and began networking with teams while the final matches commenced. The award ceremony would follow with the final tallying of points.
Fork Union’s team sat with quiet anticipation as each of the judges awards were given to well deserving teams. These awards correlate with many elements outside the actual competition. They encourage academics, inspiration, good note-taking, community involvement, ingenuity and innovation, industrial design, team spirit, robot control and unique efforts. FIRST Robotics does a great job of capturing all of the dimensions that contribute to a successful season. Award Information
The commentator was announcing the finalists for the PTC Design Award and the Blue Devils were on the board. Their hope was building as they saw that they could win this award. The team with the “rising bird” (skylark), was selected! Cadets Li and Jameson ran down to receive their trophy with much excitement. The team was also a finalist for the Think Award and came in second for the Inspire Award. Cadet Zimu Li was selected as semi-finalist for the Dean’s List Award. The Blue Devils accomplishments were being recognized, yet one question lingered.
All of the awards had been passed and the respective teams were acknowledged; every team waited with great anticipation to see who would advance. Many notable teams were selected to move on to the state championship, yet none of them were as excited as our very own Blue Devils, team 7844. All of their hard work had paid off and this achievement is commendable.
The Blue Devils robotics team would like to thank all who contributed to their success. Both the faculty and staff have been essential, providing resources and time necessary for a competitive robot. The state championship will be held on February 28, 2015, at Saint Christopher’s School in Richmond.
